چکیده

Recently we reported the profound effects of second-sphere crown ether binding upon the redox energetics and intervalence spectroscopy of selected mixed-valence (Crowd metal complex associatino is driven primarily by ether oxygen/ ammine hydrogen interactions, where the H-bond-donating capability of NH3 is greatly enhanced by coordination to a transition-metal cation.) For delocalized species such as the Creutz-Taube ion and its derivative^,^ asymmetric binding of a single crown (eq la) can significantly perturb the basic

Intervalence excitation of the Creutz-Taube ion. Resonance Raman and time-dependent scattering studies of Franck-Condon effects

Franck-Condon effects associated with intervalence excitation of the Creutz-Taube ion (a prototypical delocalized mixed-valency system) have been evaluated via a time-dependent analysis of resonance Raman scattering intensities and the intervalence absorption lineshape. Quantitative studies in the extended near infrared (1320 nm excitation) revealed that at least eight, and possibly nine, vibra...

Contrasting electroabsorbance behavior of two borderline class II/class III mixed-valence systems

Intervalence Stark effect spectroscopy of a symmetrically substituted and an asymmetrically substituted derivative of the Creutz– Taube ion, ðNH3Þ5Ru-pyrazine-RuðNH3Þ 5þ 5 , is reported. Like the formally mixed-valent parent ion, both appear to lie near the boundary between valence delocalization and valence localization. Remarkably, despite the close structural similarities of the two compound...

Towards a comprehensive model for the electronic and vibrational structure of the Creutz-Taube ion.

Since the synthesis of the Creutz-Taube ion, the nature of its charge localization has been of immense scientific interest, this molecule providing a model system for the understanding of the operation of biological photosynthetic and electron-transfer processes. However, recent work has shown that its nature remains an open question. Many systems of this type, including photosynthetic reaction...

Solvent Control of Orbital Mixing and Electronic Coupling in Ligand-Bridged Mixed-Valence Complexes: Evidence for an Intervalence Hole-Transfer Pathway

Solvent-induced electronic effects exist for intervalence charge-transfer reactions involving complexes of the type (2,2'-bipyridine)2C1Ru11(pyrazine)Run1(NH3)4LCC, where L = NH3 or various pyrazyl, pyridyl, or polypyridyl ligands. Specifically the following are found: (1) Mixing between appropriate donor and acceptor metal orbitals can be influenced substantially by the nature of the solvent. ...

Probing the localized-to-delocalized transition.

Detailed understanding of the transition between localized and delocalized behaviour in mixed valence compounds has been elusive as evidenced by many interpretations of the Creutz-Taube ion, [(NH3)5Ru(pz)Ru(NH3)5]5+. In a review in 2001, experimental protocols and a systematic model to probe this region were proposed and applied to examples in the literature. The model included: (i) multiple or...
